| Kingston looks to stormwater management |
|
KINGSTON - The City of Kingston is looking for new ways to study its stormwater management, and the city council passed a resolution Tuesday that members believe will lead them in the right direction. The council unanimously approved a grant application to the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Grant Fund for $60,000 to study the many estuaries located within the city borders, including several major trouble spots in Uptown. Majority Leader William Reynolds said the issue is of growing concern in the city. “Non-source point pollution has been becoming a big problem, and that’s anywhere in an urban environment,” explained Reynolds. “Rain hits pavement, rain hits rooftops, and the more development you have, the more this runoff will just go down the street and into water bodies, such as brooks, like the Rondout Creek.” Reynolds said he hopes a study focusing on where the runoff is coming from, and how they can manage it, will help protect the creek and the Hudson River. The alderman hopes NYSDEC will answer the grant application in the next three to six months, but said there has been no indication as to exactly when the it will be considered, or how much they would be eligible for. |
