Man arrested in Oregon in 1995 Newburgh killing

Fuentes

NEWBURGH – A murder suspect is being held in the Orange County Jail in Goshen following his arrest in Oregon and his return to the county.

Jesus Rosas Fuentes, 36, is accused of the September 29, 1995 shooting and killing Elpidio Guerrero, 19, in the Washington Heights area of the City of Newburgh. The incident, which is thought to have been a case of mistaken identity, was believed to be gang related.

Police Lt. Charles Broe said Fuentes absconded at the time he was indicted.

Fuentes was arrested in Oregon last Wednesday by agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and flown to Stewart Airport where he was taken into custody by Newburgh officers.

He was charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter. Guerrero had been indicted on manslaughter charges on February 6, 1996.

A second suspect was arrested and pled guilty to a manslaughter charge.
