$8 million SLCH emergency department expansion underway

Major expansion underway

NEWBURGH – With the swing of silver sledgehammers on Tuesday, St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital officials and local dignitaries, launched the ceremonial start of the $8 million remodeling of the Newburgh campus emergency department.

Hospital President Joan Cusack McGuirk took the first swing at the temporary wall erected in front of the emergency department.

The construction project will provide several upgrades to the campus ER, McGuirk said.

“We will have a 10-bed observation unit, and that is basically for patients who do not really need to be admitted to the hospital but need a little bit of an extended stay,” McGuirk said. “So we will have 10 beds where we can observe the patients and then treat them and then get them back into community resources or back home and we will also expand fast-track and ambulance bays to enhance efficiency and in addition to that, we will have our own MRI unit, which we are really excited about.”

What makes the project even sweeter is it will cost the hospital community nothing. The state health department is footing the entire bill.
