Ellenville driver charged with injuring boy on bike


ELLENVILLE – An Ellenville woman, who told police she witnessed an afternoon, January 10 car accident involving a 10-year-old boy riding a bicycle at the intersection of Church and Canal streets, was arrested for being the hit-and-run driver.

Chantal Zapata, 20, told police right after the accident that she witnessed it and that the driver was a man, who had fled the scene. Following an intensive investigation by Ellenville Police, Zapata admitted to being the person who struck the child.

The boy was initially treated at Ellenville Regional Hospital and later transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where he underwent surgery. He spent five days in the hospital.

Zapata was charged with leaving the scene of a serious physical injury motor vehicle accident, tampering with physical evidence, and giving a false statement, as well as infractions of having a cracked windshield and expired inspection on her vehicle. She was released pending a future court appearance.
