Early voting on the NY legislature agenda; Sullivan election officials watching closely

MONTICELLO – The state legislature convenes its 2019 session today and some measures topping their agenda are being watched closely in Sullivan County.

Democrat Election Commissioner Cora Edwards told county legislators that with Democrats now controlling both chambers, New York could consider what most other states are already doing.

“There are a lot of changes that are going to be coming down the pike with regards to legislation in the Assembly and the Senate.  One has to do with early voting.”

Nothing is final but Edwards, who with her Republican colleague attended a seminar in Albany last week, said a 10-day window is being considered.

Edwards said that, and relaxing New York’s strict requirements for absentee ballots, likely would mean more people voting.

That she said will benefit the snowbirds in particular who will have more time to vote according to their schedule or will find it easier to get an absentee ballot if they won’t be around.
