Changing of the guard at Putnam County Cornell Cooperative Extension

Hubert, left, accepts the keys from Keith

CARMEL - Stefanie Hubert, a 14-year employee of Cornell Cooperative Extension has been named executive director of Putnam County Cornell Cooperative Extension Services following the retirement of Marjorie Keith who has departed following a 44-year career.

On the final day of Keith’s employment, last week the “keys to the shop” were exchanged and both women sat down to chat.

Hubert comes to Putnam Cornell Cooperative Extension after working her way up the ladder to become a regional project manager prior to her new appointment.

Hubert’s home office was originally Orange County where she worked as a nutrition educator but prior to arriving in Putnam, the Southern Dutchess County resident worked on a regional grant called East Smart that incorporated the seven counties in the Hudson Valley.

Hubert wrote the grant proposal and secured $5.5 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the program that is spread out over a five-year period.

Keith, who has known her successor for many years, described Hubert as a “professional with strong management skills in addition to a vast knowledge of health and nutrition.”

Hubert has already begun learning about her new home and intends to hit the ground running by meeting stakeholders and conducting a needs assessment in addition to “hearing what our constituents want and need. Around New York State, Cooperative Extension is often referred to as the ‘best kept secret.’ My goal is get Cornell Cooperative Extension on the forefront of everyone’s mind.”

Hubert noted many people still refer to Cooperative Extension as an agency dealing solely with gardens, horticulture and the out-of-doors. “Social and health items are also on our front burner. The opioid epidemic has reached monumental proportions not only locally but nationally as well. Putnam County must become progressive and by collaborating with our Health Department, County Executive and other individuals and associations, we will combine our efforts to fight this epidemic.”

What advice does Keith have for Hubert?

“Putnam County has a great staff associated with Cornell Cooperative Extension including educators, volunteers, master gardeners and 4-H leaders who are all here to work with Stefanie in making our programs stronger and better than what they are today.”
