Monticello mayor brings ice skating back to Broadway | |||
MONTICELLO – For the first time in two decades, the Village of Monticello should have a skating rink on Broadway. Mayor Gary Sommers sees that recreational opportunity, on the site of the former Rhulen Building, as a way to bring people back to rejuvenate downtown. “We are going to use that as a tool bring people back to Broadway to see that Broadway is a nice place, it’s not as scary a place as people envision on the other end of this county. That seemed to have worked for us when I was mayor 20 years ago. When we put the skating rink the biggest comment was, ‘I came to Broadway to take my kids skating and Broadway is pretty nice’.” Sommers believes as the economy of Sullivan County continues to improve, the growth will trickle down to the Village of Monticello. |
