Caregiver charged with stealing from elderly victims

POUGHKEEPSIE – An Elizaville woman was arrested by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office as the result of an ongoing investigation into the exploitation of vulnerable adults in the northern Dutchess area.

Police said at this time Susan Niekrewicz, 50, is accused of stealing several thousand dollars as well as jewelry and other belongings from a sick adult she was caring for in the Milan area.

She is also under investigation in connection with more thefts from at least one other victim, an elderly person for whom she cares in the Rhinebeck area, and other charges are pending in that care.

Some of the stolen property from both cases has been recovered.

The thefts are alleged to have occurred through all of 2018.

Niekrewicz was arrested on Thursday and charged with grand larceny, endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disabled adult, both of which are felonies. She was released to the supervision of Dutchess Probation.
