Central Hudson warns of scam

POUGHKEEPSIE – Customers of Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation have reported heightened scammer activity in recent days, with bogus calls threatening to disconnect utility services if payment by way of a purchased prepaid card is not made immediately.

The scam calls appear to be from Central Hudson using the company’s caller ID phone number.

Central Hudson said it would never request a payment in that way and warns customers to be vigilant against those scams. If they doubt the validity of the call, they are advised to hang up and call Central Hudson at 845-452-2700.

Company President Charles Freni said Central Hudson follows all regulations when communicating with customers about their accounts. Employees and authorized contractors drive marked vehicles and carry photo ID, and will always display it upon request, he said. “If there is ever any doubt about the authenticity of a contact, whether in person, on line or by phone, customers should call Central Hudson for confirmation,” Freni said.
