Memorial service to be held for fallen Dutchess County Marine

POUGHKEEPSIE – A memorial service for USMC Major James Brophy of Staatsburg who perished over the Sea of Japan on December 6 will take place this Friday, January 11 in Poughkeepsie. 

The service is being held at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center at 11 a.m., followed by a procession to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

Four other service members were also killed when two military planes collided off the coast of Kochi, Japan.

Brophy was a highly-decorated, 12-year veteran of the Marine Corps. who earned the Air Medal with two Strike Flight Awards, one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and one Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

The funeral procession will travel the following route: North on Civic Center Plaza, turning left on Mill Street to Columbus Drive. Following Columbus Drive the procession will turn left on Church Street (eastbound arterial) followed by a right on Academy Street. The procession will follow along Academy Street until making a left on South Avenue, proceeding to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. 

City police will have the route closed during the procession. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes. Civic Center Plaza will also experience lane closures during the ceremony and procession.
