Car strikes two pedestrians, kills one

TOWN OF ULSTER - A motorist driving on Ulster Avenue near the Route 199 overpass in the Town of Ulster early Sunday struck two people as they walked in the northbound lane. One of the pedestrians was killed.

Ulster Town Police Chief Kyle Berardi said a 38-year-old Saugerties man was driving Subaru at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday when he struck the two people, Jaime Mengel, 36, of Slingerlands, and Alexander Terwillegar, 26, of Connelly, as they walked in the road.

They were both treated at the scene by members of the Ulster Hose and Mobile Life Support Service. Mengel was transported to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston where she died. Terwillegar was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie with serious injuries.

No tickets were immediately issued. The accident remains under investigation.

Ulster Police were assisted at the scene by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, State Police and State Department of Transportation.
