New Paltz Village official announces for Ulster legislature

NEW PALTZ – New Paltz Village Planning Board Chairwoman Eve Walter has announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Ulster County legislator.

Walter has been active in the community and government for several years and has had her sights set on the county post for some time.

“This is something I have dreamed of doing for nearly two decades. I was so inspired last November by the power of democracy seeing so many great people elected to our federal and state governments."

Walter has been vice chairwoman of the Ulster County Criminal Justice Council, former president of the Rosendale Theatre, and a commissioner on the New York State Women’s Suffrage Commission. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology and is a research scientist at both the Institute for Family Health and the Benjamin Center for Public Policy Initiatives at SUNY New Paltz.

Her agenda for county government change includes innovations to improve public transportation, increasing affordable housing and decreasing the cost of living, ensuring the county has its own hospital of excellence, collaborating with local governments to reduce employee health insurance costs, redistributing sales and short-term rental tax to increase shares to towns and villages, and implementing a more robust agenda to move the county toward net zero carbon emissions.
