Evidence of bedbugs found in SUNY Sullivan dorm

LOCH SHELDRAKE – Bedbug casings, the outer layer of bedbugs that have been shed, were found this past Tuesday on a sofa in the Lazarus I. Levine Residence Hall at SUNY Sullivan.

A college spokeswoman said the administration immediately brought in a professional exterminator to treat all common areas including furniture in the residence hall.

No students have reported finding any bedbugs in their rooms and no students have asked to be relocated or have been relocated to different rooms because of the situation.

The college official also said no students have gone to campus health services to report any physical injuries caused by bedbugs and student mattresses in the residence hall are bedbug resistant.

Because several dormitory students had recently been diagnosed with the flu, the college and residential staff had already begun an educational campaign encouraging students to wash their sheets frequently in hot water, which also serves as a precaution against bedbug infestations.

The college administration is continuing to monitor the situation and will act accordingly and in the best interests of the students, the spokeswoman said.
