Ulster Democratic Committee blasts VanBlarcum over mailer

VanBlarcum mailer

KINGSTON – Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum, who lost the Democratic Party nomination for re-election to Juan Figueroa but is challenging him for that line in Thursday’s primary, has come under fire from the leadership of the party for “blatantly attempting to deceive Democratic voters.”

VanBlarcum, who will be running in November on the Republican line regardless of what happens Thursday, sent out a mailer stating he has been endorsed by the Democratic Committee four times.

The Democrats maintain VanBlarcum has perpetrated a lie by omission.

The incumbent sheriff doesn’t see it that way.

“The truth is the truth,” VanBlarcum said. “I have been endorsed by the Democratic Committee four times to be their Ulster County Sheriff, so to say anything other than that is not the truth. The truth is they endorsed me four times. If I was endorsed this time, the mailer would have said I was endorsed five times.”

Democratic Chairman Frank Cardinale is “disappointed that the sheriff would attempt to mislead the voters that he received the endorsement of the Democratic Committee when actually Juan Figueroa received over 85 percent of the vote.”
