Orange County DA’s Conviction Integrity Program in third year

GOSHEN – The Conviction Integrity Program created by Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler three years ago has reviewed 35 cases with no allegations found sufficient to warrant relief.

The program’s review committee looks at cases where a person who was convicted of a crime maintains innocence or they believe was convicted of a crime that was grossly disproportionate to the criminal conduct the person committed, said Hoovler.

“The actual number of claims of innocence that someone didn’t do the crime is very minimal,” the DA said. “The vast majority of the claims deal with procedural errors or ineffective assistance of counsel or issues dealing with a breakdown between the defendant and their lawyer.”

Hoovler said he is relieved to see that “fresh eyes” on the cases reviewed did not find any reason to question their outcomes.
