Drowsy driver takes out utility pole

(Ramapo police photo)

RAMAPO - A motorist driving an SUV fell asleep while westbound on Viola Road and struck a telephone pole Wednesday morning. The pole then came down and caught fire.

The Monsey and Hillcrest Fire Departments responded. The road was closed for about two hours while O&R repaired the damage.

Police remind motorists that driving while sleepy can be as  dangerous as driving under the influence.
