Sullivan to add routes and new bus

MONTICELLO - Thanks to those involved in the County’s transportation coordination and grantwriting efforts, the State and Federal governments are giving Sullivan County $125,000 to improve public transportation.

A 20-passenger bus will be purchased with $78,000 of that funding, while the remaining $47,000 will help cover operating expenses. Combined with a request for proposals due last month from potential private operators, this will lead to an expanded public transit system.

“The dedicated efforts of the creators of the Countywide Coordinated Transportation Plan – a critical strategic document approved by the County Legislature in August 2015 – have paid off, literally,” said County Manager Josh Potosek. “I thank them and our Grants Administration staff for steadfastly seeking these monies so we can better serve the public.”

“New transportation routes will be developed, as will brochures that will be available in English and Spanish,” said District 7 Legislator Joe Perrello, chair of the Legislature’s Public Works Committee. “This expansion will definitely have a positive impact and enhance the quality of life for everyone. It will dovetail nicely with the new development – and the need for new employees – Sullivan County is now experiencing.”

The Countywide Coordinated Transportation Plan envisions and prepares for a wider scope of transportation services in Sullivan County. The full report can be viewed at sullivanny.us/Departments/PlanningEnvironmental/PlansandStudies/CoordinatedTransportationPlan.
