Ellenville Village trustee kills ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend, himself

ELLENVILLE – Long time Ellenville Village Trustee Efrain Lopez, 55, shot and killed his girlfriend and another man before he took his own life, Ellenville Police Chief Philip Mattracion said Thursday.

Lopez, who was also a longtime maintenance employee of the Ellenville Central School District, followed the two into a parking lot on Center Street, shot and killed both and then shot himself to death, the chief said.

The chief knew Lopez for over 30 years and he was stunned by the events.

“I cannot even explain how I feel at this point,” Mattracion. “I was shocked. There were many emotions running through me – shock, disappointment, unbelievable sadness; it’s indescribable in my emotions toward this. In a thousand years if you were to tell me I was going to respond to this at 9:56 this morning, I would have told you, you were crazy.”

Mattracion said Lopez followed the victims to a parking lot and when Cruz got out of his car, Lopez shot and killed him, then walked up to Soto who was sitting in the passenger seat and shot and killed her before turning the rifle on himself.

A 30-30 rifle was used to shoot and kill all three people.

Marguerita Soto and Jose Cruz, both 55, and both from Ellenville, were pronounced dead at the scene along with Lopez. The chief said Soto had been dating Cruz for a short time.
