Former fire department treasurer pleads guilty to embezzlement

WHITE PLAINS – A former fire department treasurer pled guilty in federal court on Friday to embezzling more than $38,000 from the Putnam Engine & Hose Co. No. 2, a unit of the Port Chester Volunteer Fire Department.

Robert Gerardi, 62, of Port Chester, stole the funds to pay for his $40,000 loss when he allegedly fell for an online scam, said State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. “This case illustrates the need for vigilant oversight of anyone in charge of public funds,” he said.

Gerardi pled guilty to one count of theft concerning a program receiving federal funds, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison. He will be sentenced in March 2019.
