Huge crowds attend holiday parades

MID-HUDSON – The weatherman behaved!

Despite rain in the forecast, enormous crowds filled downtown Carmel Saturday evening for the 24th annual Holiday on the Lake parade.

Other holiday parades were held in the Village of Montgomery and Town of Wallkill, attended by large crowds.

In Carmel, police estimated more than 5,000 were on hand for the county seat’s annual electric light extravaganza featuring some 40 brightly lit and colored floats.

Following the parade, a switch was flicked and 80 holiday trees along the Gleneida lakeshore became illuminated as Christmas carols echoed throughout the downtown.

Activities that preceded the parade included a pancake breakfast, Christmas crafts, a caroling festival, hayrides, a chowder tasting event and a Santa Stroll where bystanders cheered on a small army of Santa’s to benefit the American Cancer Society.

And as if on cue as the festivities wound down, it began to rain. Thank you weatherman!
