Interest brewing in former prison buildings

WARWICK – The new medical marijuana facility under construction at the Warwick Corporate Park in the Town of Warwick is the first new construction at the former Mid-Orange Correctional Facility, but there are several old buildings on the property that have spurred interest.

Orange County Partnership President Maureen Halahan said many of the former prison facilities are being considered for reuse.

“Some of those buildings are creating a lot of attention in the bed and breakfast space, some boutique hotel people are looking at this bucolic park; looking at the stately old brick buildings and wanting to possibly locate a boutique hotel at the Warwick corporate park,” Halahan said.

The former prison was closed by the state at the end of 2011.
