While Florida feels effects of Irma, Sullivan is still dealing with Stella

MONTICELLO – It was near-perfect late summer weekend around here while Florida was dealing with one of the biggest hurricanes on record.  That monster storm will have little or no impact around here, other than perhaps some showers later in the week.

It was a storm of a different sort that last had a big impact on the Hudson Valley and Catskills in March.  Stella dumped two feet of snow on the region.

Sullivan County Manager Joshua Potosek told the county legislature’s Public Safety Committee that they are still paying for Stella.

“As we’re getting ready for snow this year, we’re in the middle of claiming for Winter Storm Stella that took place in March this past winter.  We’ve been qualified, towns, villages, school districts that have put in claims are all qualified.  We are able to, the county looks like it will get in the neighborhood of a little bit over $100,000.”

Potosek said that will help cover the cost of overtime, salt and other expenses related to the storm.

The bad news, he said, is the check may not be in the mail for a few more months.
