Sullivan sales tax revenue up, and down

MONTICELLO – A key piece of non-property-related revenue for counties is a sales tax.  In Sullivan County, the revenue has been up and down.

County Treasurer Nancy Buck told the county legislature’s Management and Budget Committee on Thursday, their last check was down a bit.

She said it is hard to gauge, month-to-month, how the revenue components will fall.

“They were half and half; some were way down and some were up,” Buck said.  “There was no consistency so I can’t tell you what happened.”

Mortgage and room taxes are both up.

Buck said they are still within reach of revenue projections for this year.

Things could change significantly by spring of next year.  The opening of the long-awaited casino near the commercial and retail center of the county could drive a lot of spinoff economic activity.
