Only one challenged seat on Middletown Common Council

MIDDLETOWN – There are four wards with two alder-members in each, plus the alderman-at-large, who serves as council president in the City of Middletown.

Of those nine races next month, only one is being challenged. There is one unopposed incumbent Republican while the others are unopposed Democrats.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano, a Democrat, says there should be political competition.

“I think the Republicans should be putting up candidates to run against the Democrats and that we can have a real discussion of issues as we move forward,” he said. “I don’t think it’s good for democracy anywhere that people run unopposed.

DeStefano is running for another term unchallenged.

City Democrats opened their campaign headquarters Thursday night.
