Neuhaus wants to move tourism and economic development to county government

GOSHEN – The Orange County Tourism Office has been an independent entity for years, but now that its long-time director, Susan Hawvermale, is retiring at the end of the month, County Executive Steven Neuhaus would like to bring the office under the county government umbrella.

Under a previous administration, the county had an economic development office, but that function had been handed over to the Orange County Partnership, a quasi-governmental agency which is funded from businesses and the county.

Neuhaus wants to ramp up tourism efforts.

“Economic development and tourism go hand in hand and I intend to bring them under my office so that we can have a better impact on their delivery,” he said.

Neuhaus has been increasing county funding for tourism promotion during his tenure to promote the county and what it has to offer to visitors. On Thursday, he said the county will be partnering with Legoland and Casino World Catskills to promote Orange County and the region.
