Girl struck and killed by school bus in KJ

KIRYAS JOEL – A young girl was struck and killed by a school bus in the Village of Kiryas Joel late Friday morning, State Police said.

The child, identified as Leah Mezzi, 6, of Brooklyn, was struck around 11:15 a.m. in the intersection of Acres Road and Lemburg Court.

Police said the bus stopped to let several children off. The victim exited the bus and proceeded to a south sidewalk and abruptly changed directions and began to cross the street in front of the bus. The bus driver did not see her change directions and she was struck by the front bumper.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police BCI, Commercial Vehicle Unit and Accident Reconstruction Unit are investigating.
