Girl, 16, suffers head injury in fall from bike

GREENPORT – A 16-year-old Austerlitz girl sustained a head injury when she lost her balance while riding her bicycle, when off the road, down a ditch and struck her head, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The girl, whose name they did not release, was riding on State Route 203 on Friday afternoon shortly after 4 when she went off the shoulder of the roadway. She was not wearing a helmet and when she ran off the road, she went down into the ditch, fell off the bike and struck her head.

The deputy at the scene was able to determine there was no vehicle involved in the accident.

Chatham Rescue Squad responded to the scene and evaluated the girl, who was airlifted to Albany Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon, police said.

The Chatham Rescue Squad, Fire Department and Police Department assisted at the scene.
