Saugerties woman killed in three-vehicle crash

TOWN OF ULSTER – A woman, who was a passenger in a car, was killed minutes before 6 p.m. on Wednesday when the car in which she was riding was struck from behind, forced into the opposite lane and struck by a truck.

Town of Ulster Police investigated the incident in which Helen Fogarty, 48, of Saugerties was killed.

They said Alton Mitchell, 26, of Lake Katrine, was southbound on Route 9W at the intersection of Tuytenbridge Road when his car struck a car driven by Ernest Breitung, 49, of Saugerties. The impact forced his car into the northbound lane and that was struck by a truck driven by Anthony Bell, 49, of Saugerties.

Fogarty died at the scene. Breitung was transported to Health Alliance of the Hudson Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Bell was treated at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck and released. Mitchell was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.

Ulster Police were assisted by State Police, Ulster Hose Fire Department, Mobile Life Support Services and the state Department of Transportation.
