NEWBURGH – What began as an attempted traffic stop by Newburgh Town Police Tuesday afternoon resulted in the arrests of two men in the City of Newburgh.

The two men fled from town police and drove throughout a portion of the city until their car crashed into a Town of Newburgh police car on Lake Street in the city.

The driver took off on foot running onto Muchattoes Lake, which was partially frozen. He apparently thought it was solid ice through and through but as he ran, he fell through into the frigid water until he was rescued by a first responder and taken to the hospital.

The other man was taken into custody by police at the scene.

There was no word Tuesday night as to the initial reason for the attempted traffic stop.
