MIDDLETOWN – Tony Reid of Middletown is a corrections officer at Riker’s Island and an Army reservist and when he is not engaged in either role, he is a drone pilot who has provided relief following Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

In August, Reid and his partners aided state officials in Texas.

“We were utilizing our drones to inspect hazardous material for the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality,” Reid said.

When Maria hit Puerto Rico, he hopped on a plane to aid in that relief effort with the American Red Cross and the military.

“Certain roads were so blocked so aerial drones were used to map out the areas where it needs to be cleared and then you get a team down there to cut up the trees.”

Reid said using the drones during the hurricane relief missions was “a very valuable learning experience, especially for future natural disasters.”
