Fox attacks Putnam County woman in her yard

MAHOPAC – A Mahopac woman is recuperating after she was attacked by a fox that ran from nearby woods into her yard.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said the woman was in her yard on Agor Lane at about 5:45 p.m. when the gray fox ran from the woods attacking and biting her left ankle and clawed her right ankle and foot, drawing blood.

The woman ran inside her home to get away from the animal, but it pursued her inside where her children were located. She grabbed her children and fled, closing the door behind them, trapping the fox inside, and then she called 911.

Putnam Sheriff’s deputies responded along with paramedics and an ambulance. The woman was given first aid for bite and claw wounds and was taken by ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel for further treatment.

Officers from the state Environmental Conservation Police caught the fox. It will be tested for rabies at a state laboratory in Albany.
