Members of community watch group capture assault suspect

MONSEY – A man, who allegedly entered the backyard of a Ronald Drive home in Monsey on Friday afternoon and attacked a 78-year-old woman, was arrested thanks to the fast work of two members of the Chaverim community watch organization.

Ramapo Police were called to the scene around 1:40 p.m. and took Hayler Ruiz-Alejo, 30, of Spring Valley, into custody.

Ruiz-Alejo allegedly approached the victim from behind and grabbed her around the head and neck and proceeded to drag her away, toward the corner of the property. Her screams alerted the two Chaverim members, who intervened.

Ruiz-Alejo attempted to flee on foot, but was detained by the watch group members until police officers arrived.

Detectives from Ramapo Police and the Rockland county Sheriff’s Evidence Collection Unit responded to the scene and continued the investigation.

Ruiz-Alejo was charged with attempted robbery, assault, criminal trespass and DWI. Other charges are pending, police said.
