Monticello mayor wants state AG to investigate village government

MONTICELLO - Mayor Gordon Jenkins said the Village of Monticello should be investigated by the state attorney general’s office.

In fact, he has called a special meeting of the village board for next Monday night to try to have that adopted.

The mayor is outnumbered by opponents on the board, who often times overrule what he proposes. The majority has already passed a resolution calling on the village manager to conduct an investigation.

But, Jenkins wants any investigation to be conducted by the state. “I think they should change it. The attorney general’s office is in charge of public integrity and they should be investigating the village,” he said, Wednesday. “As far as I am concerned, even the mayor shouldn’t have an investigation. The attorney general should investigate the mayor, the village manager and the trustees.”

Jenkins believes the board of trustees wanted an investigation because of former Village Clerk Edith Schop, who resigned after she was indicted on charges unrelated to her village job.
