Fatal car crash in Putnam County

TOWN OF KENT – A 65-year-old Cortlandt Manor man was killed when his car ran off Route 301 in the area of the Canopus Lake boat launch in Putnam Valley and crashed down a steep embankment.

Putnam County Sheriff Kevin McConville identified the victim of the 3 p.m. accident on Friday, December 30 as James Cottrell.

He was alone at the time when for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the roadway and traveled up the end of a guide rail where it overturned and struck a rock embankment, the sheriff said.

Cottrell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kent fire officials said the victim was heavily entrapped in the vehicle.

Three firefighters sustained minor injuries while attempting to free him. They were treated and released at Putnam Hospital.

Assisting at the scene were North Highlands Engine Company #1, Putnam Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Town of Kent Police, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Ambulnz by DocGo, and Hackensack Air Med 1.
