NEWBURGH – One day after a 29-year-old Newburgh man was shot and killed and a five-year-old boy riding his bicycle was wounded, shots rang out Friday night in the City of Newburgh.
Police Chief Anthony Geraci said a football game between Newburgh Free Academy and Warwick High School had just concluded at 9:35 p.m. when a fight broke out in a parking lot at the Newburgh school with at least five gunshots fired. Some 2,000 spectators were leaving the game at the time.
A 43-year-old woman was shot in the foot, a 17-year-old girl was shot in the thigh and a 21-year-old man was shot in the ankle, the chief said.
“It’s unacceptable. We’re fed up with the gun violence in this community. The trauma that is being inflicted upon our youth in this community has to stop and it has to stop with all of us as one community,” he said.
Deputy Newburgh Schools Superintendent Ed Forgit said the district “takes these incidents very seriously.” He said safety and crisis intervention teams are in place to assist students and the community following this latest violence.
Over 100 law enforcement personnel from 17 agencies were on the scene investigating.
