HAMLET OF WALLKILL – A 17-year-old Wallkill High School student died Monday evening.

Miguel Lugo

The announcement of the death of Miguel Lugo was made by Superintendent of Schools Kevin Castle.

A person familiar with the incident said the teen collapsed after a football team practice. He wore jersey #25.

Miguel’s grandmother, Dorothy Lugo, wrote on Facebook that “I was there when you were born and you stole my heart the minute I laid eyes on you. My handsome grandson, 17 years is not enough but they were the best and happiest ones they could be. They won’t be the same without you, my beautiful grandson. RIP till we area together again.”

“I had the pleasure of knowing Miguel and when he saw me, he never hesitated to say hello. He was a very kind and respectful person,” Castle wrote in a note to district parents and guardians. “He was well-liked by both students and adults. The Wallkill Learning Community will truly miss Miguel.”

Castle said counselors will be available at the high school as long as necessary for students and staff.

A GoFundMe page has been created to provide financial support to the family.
